LA LLAMA INTERVIEW

How did the collaboration between La Llama x Fiona Jane come together?
Lydia the designer behind La Llama found me on Instagram. I loved her unique vintage-inspired designs and independent London label so we meet up. We clicked and the ideas was flowing which resulted in the video ‘ A Day with DJ Fiona Jane’ shot in Notting Hill.

What was your first music memories as a child?
My mum singing German children songs to me and later on playing classic music on vinyl. At Christmas my auntie Jane always gifted stacks of CDs as she was working for Virgin records. She also managed the Spice Girls, and she would share inside gossip stories and gift me signed merchandise, I was in heaven! Another memory is when I bought my first CD, Im quite sure it was with Ace of Base, Happy Nation in 1992!

How did you get into DJing?
I grew up with music in my family in various ways, but my brother was the real music nerd and has an incredible good taste and a big music collection from very early on. He was also living in Berlin in the golden rave days! Fashion was my first passion from very young age and my dream was to become a fashion designer. I was travelling as a model for a couple of years, and during this time I started to really love the club culture and appreciate music in a new way. In Paris, Berlin and Munich I would become friends with party promoters and DJs, and also help them to organise and decorate their events. This way I got into event planning and DJing. It was also less about fashion and trends, but more about individuality, style and vintage clothing. After returning to Copenhagen I started creating my own event concepts and suddenly I was partnering with the most renowned clubs, promoters and Dj’s in town.

When did you DJ for the first time?
I was probably around 13 years old when I took over a teenage Cult Drink Summer party playing with CDs on an old Denon mixer. There was no vibe or DJ so I decided to control the music and created the party, I remember being so confident behind the decks. To this date, I love making people dance and see that momentary happiness in their eyes. It gives me so much joy!

What has been your highlights in your DJ career?
Playing all around the world in many different cool venues, from intimate events to clubs, playing for luxury brands such as Loewe, Louis Vuitton and Emilio Pucci and at international fashion weeks. It was a highlight for me back then when I got a residency at the (vinyl only) Chiltern Firehouse in London. It an intimate exclusive hotel bar and Ive played with Madonna, Johnny Depp and Rihanna as guests. For me it’s an actual highlight itself to be able to make a living with what I love in such a competitive and expensive place like London. So I am grateful for that. There are still many things I would like to achieve in DJ’ing such as playing at festivals and release my own music, but its all a process and I always try to remember how far Ive come already looking back at the time when I wished for where I am now!

What would be the last song you ever listened to and why?
Pink Floyd - wish you were here. It reminds me of my dad that sadly passed away to cancer in 2017. He was an Elvis fan, so any Elvis song will also make me think of him.

What has been the toughest moment in your DJ career? And what helped you get through it?
Back in Jan. 2017, it was making the decision to go back to DJ’ing and leave my career in fashion behind. I had to accept myself and believe in myself that I was good enough to make that change. It was a difficult time with a break up with an ex and losing my dad around the same time. But somehow my dad gave me strength to JUST DO IT as I realised we don’t live forever. I grew a lot and I started to live from DJing the same month I made the decision and fully believe in myself. Looking back its around 3 years ago, and Im now feeling ready to take some next steps in my career and personal life too. What also really helped me through it all was the support from a close friend.

What advice would you give to anyone who wanted to pursue a similar path to you?
As a creative many ideas are flowing and there are many things you would like to achieve and you will, however its important to focus on one thing for a while and make that really good and afterwards go on to the next thing. Else you loose yourself in all your ideas and never move anywhere. Trust me there will be time for everything your heart desires. Start with small action steps, to not overwhelm yourself.

What have been your best parties?
There are many, but several of them has most probably taken place at Berghain, Day 0 in Tulum deep jungle, Burning Man sunrise or sunset,  DC10 in Ibiza and Distortion festival in Copenhagen back in the early golden rave days!

What’s your favourite DJ’s and producers?
Here are a few favourites, as you can see it shows pretty much how eclectic my DJ sets are. Todd Terje, DJ Harvey, Crazy P, Tensnake, Psychemagik, Tiger & Woods, Gerd Janson, Joey Negro, Greg Wilson, Eagels & Butterflies, Superpitcher, Moodymann, Daniel Bortz, David Mayer, Cassy, Folamour, Who Made Who, Acid Pauli, DJ Tennis, Damian Lazarus and The Ancient Moons, Matthias Meyer, Trentemoller, M.A.N.DY, David August, Mathew Johnson, 2raumwohnung, Roman Flugel, Rufus Du Sol, Lulu Rouge and Jan Blomqvist. Im am working on a new mix including some of these artists and will share as soon as its ready!

What projects are you working on during quarantine? I am working on a concept idea Ive had for many years now and finally I can see it come together, although the services I offer might have to wait for a while because of corona, but meanwhile I visualise it and prepare for it. Beside this I work on a few brand collaborations, and then I started taking beginner Abelton online classes and also doing a 4-week Manifestation Course with my friend and coach Eva Dixon. I am also working on a newsletter and preparing music for my next mix. I try to meditate everyday and keep my healthy sleeping and eating routines to be able to maximise my time the best way.
